Scope and Content Aerial view of Culross Abbey, Culross Abbey Church and Culross Abbey House, Fife Culross Abbey Church was part of the Cistercian Abbey founded in 1217 by Malcolm, Earl of Fife. It was converted into a parish church in 1663, the rest of the abbey having lain derelict since the end of the 16th century. The tower was added 1498-1513. Only a single wall survives from the original nave. The monastic choir was built around 1300 and became the main body of the building when the nave was abandoned and the tower built in around 1500. The battlements on the tower are modern. Culross Abbey House (just above the Abbey Church in the photograph) was built in 1608 by Lord Edward Bruce of Kinloss. It was largely rebuilt as a three-storeyed mansion in 1830 by Sir Robert Preston. This was partially dismantled in 1955. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
