Scope and Content View from south-west of Seatower, No 46 Racecourse Road, Ayr, South Ayrshire Seatower was built c.1860 for Mr David Hunter, whose initials appear on a window lighting the staircase. This two-storeyed, five-bayed house with attics and basement was designed in the Baronial style by architect David MacGibbon (1831-1902). This shows the house with its crowstepped gables, curved corner masonry, square turret with narrow window and stepped string-course above the attic windows. Double-height bay windows can be seen (left), next to which a modern extension is being constructed. The architect David MacGibbon is well known for the series of books he wrote in conjunction with Thomas Ross: 'The Castellated and Domestic Architecture of Scotland' an 'The Ecclesiastical Architecture of Scotland'. The traditional architecture of Scotland celebrated in this book can be seen echoed in the architect's own commercial and domestic designs. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
