Scope and Content View from south of Inverdon House, No 3 Racecourse View, Ayr, South Ayrshire Inverdon House was built in 1845 to designs by architects Clarke & Bell. It is a two-storeyed house with basements and two, four-stage Italianate towers. Once a private house overlooking the old racecourse, and was later converted into flats. This shows the house from Racecourse View. The tall towers have arched, tripartite windows on their top storeys. A tripartite bow window lights the top room on the bay (centre left), whilst a double-height bay-window is a feature of the public room (centre right). The house retains some lying-pane windows (glass cut into horizontal panes). Ayr has long been famous for its race course, and horse racing has probably taken place here since the sixteenth century with the first recorded race taking place in 1777. The old racecourse was used until 1907 when a larger course was opened to the north-east of the town. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
