Scope and Content Thatched cottages, Swanston Village, Edinburgh The tiny village of Swanston lies close to the southern boundary of Edinburgh at the foot of the Pentland Hills, surrounded by small wooded areas and open farmland. It is one of Edinburgh's most picturesque villages, and is now a conservation area. This group of 18th-century former farm workers' cottages, with whitewashed walls and thatched roofs, is built on one side of the village green, a large area of ground which slopes gently to the Swanston Burn, once a valuable water supply for the village. In 1959-62, Edinburgh Corporation restored the 18th-century cottages, and rented out the completed houses under conditions that prohibited the use of external television aerials, and the sale or display of souvenirs, postcards or refreshments.
