Scope and Content Written on the back of the mounted print: 'Place: Edinburgh. Building: Duddingston Manse - Bedroom Chimneypiece' Photographer: 'C H C' Date: 'Nov 1962' Chimneypiece, Duddingston Manse, Old Church Lane, Duddingston Village, Edinburgh Duddingston Manse, built in 1805, lies to the east of Duddingston Parish Church behind a high stone wall that runs the length of Old Church Lane. The house looks south over a beautifully wooded garden that leads down to the lochside. This typical bedroom chimneypiece, in the style of Robert Adam, has a stone surround with a timber moulding and mantel shelf, and a semicircular cast iron grate dating from c.1805. The fireplace, burning wood or coal, was the focal point of the Georgian room and the only source of heat. In the 19th-century fireplaces often had decorative cast-iron arched openings, and were black-leaded and polished daily. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
