Building: Campbell of Barbreck Mausoleum' Photographer: 'D H S' Date: '1962' View of the Campbell of Barbreck Mausoleum, Barbreck estate, Argyll and Bute In 1768, the 4th Duke of Argyll gave most of the estate of Barbreck to General John Campbell, who built the present house which is dated 1790, and was first assessed for window tax in 1793. His descendants lived there until 1930. This mausoleum is sited on a natural knoll 650m north-north-east of the house, near a prehistoric cist. It is rubble-built, square in shape and has a pyramidal slated roof. The mausoleum contains two white marble mural tablets. One commemorates Major-General John Campbell, who was given the estate in 1768 and who died in 1794. The other commemorates Isabella Campbell, wife of Rear-Admiral Donald Campbell, who died in 1861.
