Scope and Content Inner earthwork ditch cutting, Preston Hawe, Surrey The ditch of the inner earthwork, shown here, with its accompanying bank, originally formed a considerable feature of the site. Pottery discovered while excavating the bank and ditch showed that they were constructed about 1180-1200. Many manor houses lay within a defensive enclosure, and it is possible that the ditch and bank fulfilled that function. However, the excavator felt that it may have formed part of a cattle compound, and documentary sources suggests that cattle rearing played an important part in the local economy. Preston Hawe is a medieval manor and was excavated by Brian Hope-Taylor from 1952 to 1954. He revealed that the earthworks surrounding the manor enclosed a series of buildings, including the discovery of two successive 'great' halls of the manor. The earlier hall dated to the late 12th century and the later hall dated to the 13th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
