(NY 1004 9069) Fort (NR) (Site of)

OS 6" map, 2nd series, (1898)

Faint traces of an encircling oval mound with possibly two other mounds on the narrow southern approach, easily approached from N and S along the ridge of Kirkholm Hill, on a flat-topped eminence 200 yds W of the Annan. Shown on the O S 25" map of 1858 by a dotted line enclosing an area some 170' by 140'.

D Christison 1891

APs show slight traces in the area.

Visible on air photographs RAF 541/A/524/F20: 3239-40.

(Undated) information in OS records.

Situated on the top of a broad ridge are the remains of a sub-oval earthwork enclosing an area 50.0m N-S by 36.0m transversely. It consists of a much reduced grass-covered earthen bank with slight traces of a ditch on the N, but elsewhere is generally visible as a slight scarp or crest line. There is no trace of an entrance and no internal features, but the non-defensive situation with easy access from the N and S suggest that this may be the remains of a settlement.

Resurveyed at 1:2500.

Activities

Field Visit (18 July 1990)

NY 1004 9069 NY19SW 15

This ploughed-down enclosure is situated on a steep-sided narrow ridge, aligned N and S). Subrectangular on plan, its interior measures about 45.7m from N to S by 32m transversely; for the most part, the enclosing bank has been reduced to a low scarp but on the N it measures up to 7m in thickness and 0.6m in internal height. A shallow external ditch (measuring up to 4.4m in breadth and accompanied by a low counterscarp bank) is also visible on the N.

Aerial photographs clearly show that the ditch continues around all four sides of the enclosure, and that there is an entrance on the S side. They also reveal that there is a short length of ditch cutting across the ridge about 25m S of the enclosure.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 18 July 1990.

Listed as (rectilinear) settlement.

Aerial Photographic Interpretation (20 February 1996)

NY 1004 9069 NY19SW 15

Cropmarks on aerial photographs (John Dewar 1975, RCAHMSAP 1983, 1984 and 1989) have revealed an enclosure on the crest of a narrow ridge known as Kirkholm Hill. It is roughly oval on plan, but the sides turn sharply at the N and S ends to form rounded angles. The interior measures about 70m from N to S by 50m transversely within a ditch up to 3m in breadth and there is an entrance on the S.

Information from RCAHMS (SPH), 20 February 1996.

Aerial Photographic Transcription (25 July 2012)

An interpretative transcription, or mapping, of information on oblique aerial photographs was produced on 27 July 2012.
