(NY 1118 9443) Standing Stone (NR)
OS 6" map, 1957
Whinstone boulder, 5'7" above ground, circumference at base, 12' 4". It is not known if a second boulder which protrudes from the bank at the roadside 18' away has any relation with the first, but if it is found to be deeply sunk and firmly embedded in the ground the two may be the remains of a stone circle.
RCAHMS 1920
The standing stone is as described. It is impossible to say whether the second stone set in the bank is part of a 'circle' or not.
Surveyed at 1:2500.

Field Visit (12 March 1991)
NY19SW 1 1118 9443
Situated in an arable field about 260m NNW of Gateside steading (NY19SW 89) and a short distance to the E of the public road, there is a standing stone which measures 1.83m in height, and 1.1m in breadth by 1.05m in thickness at its base. The stone is an irregular glacial erratic which has a pointed top and is thickest around its midriff.
Paterson notes the discovery of a 'roughly hewn stone with markings on it' during investigations around the base of the standing stone; this second stone cannot now be identified.
Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 12 March 1991.
J Paterson 1906.
Listed as standing stone.
