Scope and Content Skip Knowe, Gateside, standing stone, Dumfries and Galloway Immediately east of the public road and some 300m north-west of Gateside steading is a standing stone on the edge of arable land. Skip Knowe, Gateside / / / Standing Stone; Stones / DIGITAL IMAGES The purpose of standing stones remains uncertain, though most were erected during the Neolithic or early Bronze Age. Undoubtedly some held a religious or ceremonial significance, others perhaps acted as territorial or route markers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
