Archaeology Notes

NX07SE 11 0537 7425.

NX 05377425 A circular enclosure consisting of an earth-and-stone bank enclosing a raised area 1m high and 18m in diameter, with traces of a slight internal ditch and a more substantial external ditch. The bank averages 0.2m in height and 1.5m in width. The internal ditch is about 1.0m wide and the external ditch is 4.0m wide with traces of a causeway across it on the north. The wasted condition of the structure implies some antiquity. (cf NX07SE 6)

(Information from K A Steer, RCAHMS, 23 November 1955)

Visited by OS (JFC) 26 November 1955

This site straddles a small heather covered ridge. It does not appear to be an enclosure at all but merely a fortuitous combination of old quarry pits and low heaps of upcast.

Contemporary plane-table surveys and inked drawings, where available, can be viewed online in most cases - see 'Digital Images'. The original typecripts, notebooks and drawings can also be viewed in the RCAHMS search room.
