Desk Based Assessment (22 June 2017)
The Blantyre Mills Counting House, now a private residence, is located at the end of Station Road on the west bank of the River Clyde. It was once part of the Blantyre Mills, which were founded in 1785 by Henry Monteith, Bogle and Company, as cotton-spinning mills. The counting house was used by the clerks of the mill and it was where the workers’ wages were counted out. As depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 25-inch map (Lanark 1859, Sheet XI.11), it was originally attached to one of the mills. The mill buildings were demolished in the early 20th century and the 3rd edition of the OS 25-inch map (Lanarkshire 1912, 011.11) shows the counting house standing on its own.
