Scope and Content Former Counting House, Blantyre Mills, Blantyre, Lanarkshire The Blantyre Cotton Mills were founded by Henry Monteith, Bogle and Co in 1785 as cotton-spinning mills. They were later extended to produce printed calicos. They used the water-power of the Clyde. The mills were demolished in the early 20th century. This view shows the former counting-house of the mills, with its external turnpike stair. Such stairs became popular in the early 19th century, so this building was probably built then. It was originally attached to one of the mills. The counting house was the place where the business of the mills was conducted, customers and suppliers interviewed, and wages counted out. The construction of this one and that at New Lanark was probably a consequence of better accounting. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
