A skirmish is said to have taken place between a party of troops from the Cromwellian garrison of Brodick Castle and the people of Arran, c.1652. It is said to have started at Allt-a-Chlaideimh (Sword Burn) with the last man of the English party being killed at Clach-a-Chath (Cat Stone) - Clach a'Chait: NR 918488. Another version, placing the skirmish near Brodick Castle allows the governor and his party to escape by boat, except one who was chased and killed under a big rock in Merkland Wood (NS 0138): Craeg an Stobaidh - "the stabbing rock".

Clach a'Chait is a small featureless spur except for two large boulders at NR 9190 4890. The tradition could not be confirmed.
