Archaeology Notes

NF19NW 9 10 99.

Two Viking tortoise brooches, of the type Rygh 649, were found on the island of St Kilda, and certainly mark the site of a woman's grave, the exact provenance of which is unknown. The brooches one belonged to the Andersonian Museum, Glasgow, but were said to have been stolen or lost, when transferred to the present building of the Kelvingrove Museum (S Greig 1954).

It now appears that one only was lost, and the other acquired for the National Museum of Copenhagen; Accession no. 10 521: 1848:118. This is illustrated by Worsaae and is of the 10th century, type Rygh 652 (J J A Worsaae 1872)

J Anderson 1875; S Greig 1940 and 1954; J J A Worsaae 1872.

No further information, but see NF19NW 18 - possible Viking graves.
