Coalmarket lies at the heart of modern Kelso, and like many other streets and lanes in the town, its name hints at its origins, although John Wood's 1823 'Plan of the Town of Kelso' notes the square as 'Cattle or Coal Market'. Most of the buildings here date from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the result of the rebuilding which followed the 1645 and 1742 fires that destroyed much of Kelso's centre.

According to the OS Name Book, a coal market was held at this location every Friday. It was also the location of a cattle market but was commonly known as the 'Coal Market'.
