Coalmarket lies at the heart of modern Kelso, and like many other streets and lanes in the town, its name hints at its origins, although John Wood's 1823 'Plan of the Town of Kelso' notes the square as 'Cattle or Coal Market'. Most of the buildings here date from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the result of the rebuilding which followed the 1645 and 1742 fires that destroyed much of Kelso's centre.
