Archaeology Notes

NX19NE 56 19500 99943

A complex of features have been recorded as cropmarks on oblique aerial photography (RCAHMSAP 1993, 2000) in a field to the W of Gallow Hill. These include a pit-circle, composed of eight pits, which measures about 12m across. The pit-setting lies to the W of the pit-circle and comprises parallel rows of three pits. Scattered across the rest of the field there are other pits, none of which form a coherent pattern. Arcs of narrow ditches in the E and W of the field may form enclosures. A ploughed-down field boundary, which is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Ayrshire 1859, sheet xlix), runs WNW-ESE across the field and there are other linear features that are probably field drains.
