Archaeology Notes

NJ56SE 19 58252 63753

(Location cited as NJ 583 638). Mill of Durn, late 19th century. A superb example of a refined 19th century mill, with central kiln, mill at the rear, and 1-storey and attic wings on either side of the kiln. There are two pairs of stones, driven by an 8-spoke wood and iron overshot wheel, 49 ins (1.25m) wide by 16 ft (4.87m) diameter. The kiln firehole is fitted with a counterweighted damper and the kiln itself has a prominent louvred ventilator.

J R Hume 1977.
