Description Mill of Durn; Interior View of millstones and hoppers

Date 10/6/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 494172

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Mill of Durn, Banffshire This seems to have been a typical small rectangular country water-powered corn mill, rebuilt on a generous scale in the late 19th century on a T-plan with lower wings filling the angles of the T. It was driven by an overshot wheel 1.25 by 4.87m. This view shows the two pairs of millstones, with the wooden case of the bucket elevator between them. The elevator was used to transfer oats which had been husked in one pair of stones to the second pair for grinding into meal. This was one of the most sophisticated watermills in north east Scotland, and was in full working order in 1976. It has since been converted into an architect's house and office.
