Activities

Field Visit (14 July 1994)

NS95NW 105 centred on 92 55

To the N and NW of Climpy there are the remains of two mines which are identified on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Lanarkshire 1897, sheet xix) as Climpy Colliery Pit No.3 and Pit No.4.

The remains at the location of Pit No. 3 (CSW 2864, NS 9230 5555) are of a recent private mine, shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10,000 map (1991) as 'Works', and comprise two brick and concrete buildings around what may have been the pithead. The farmer stated that the roofed building at NS 9236 5565 had been the mine offices. Two shafts marked on the current edition of the 1:10,000 map (1991) to the SSE may have been associated with an earlier phase of working. There is no trace of the E shaft (CSW 2860) while to the W there is a brick stance (CSW 2859), presumably a shaft. Climpy Pit No. 3 is depicted as working on the revision of the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (1910).

The remains of Pit No. 4 (CSW 2862, NS 9291 5562) comprise a pond at the WNW end of gully, which corresponds with a level shown on the 2nd edition map. There is an extensive 'crow's foot' bing to the S and W of the pond, with spoil also extending for about 200m to the W of the Climpy Road. By the date of the revision of the 2nd edition (Lanarkshire 1910, sheet xx) the mine had closed.

Nothing now remains of two 'Old Coal Pits' (CSW 2857, NS 9274; CSW 2858, NS 9257 5529) marked on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Lanarkshire 1859, sheet xx) in the semi-improved field to the W of Climpy.

Project (August 2011 - May 2012)

An archaeological project was undertaken by CFA Archaeology Ltd on behalf of the Black Law Wind Farm Grid Connection Extension. A desk based assessment and field survey was undertaken from 2011-2012. The aim of this has been to understand direct impacts on recorded cultural heritage assets, both designated and non-designated, and on as yet undiscovered assets within the Core Study Area.
