Activities

Field Visit (26 January 1995)

NS95NW 79 9369 5966 and 9377 5968

A shaft (NS 9369 5966) and several spoil tips are depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Edinburghshire, 1864, sheet xv) immediately SE of Bridge-end. The spoil tip associated with this shaft, and another (at NS 9377 5968) are still clearly visible, but much of this area has recently been afforested and a number of spoil tips were destroyed between the revision dates of 1864 and 1895 during the construction of the Edinburgh-Glasgow railway and the branch line that served the ironstone mines (NS95NW 16.00), on the Gladsmuir Hills (OS 6-inch map, Edinburghshire, 2nd edition, 1895, sheet x.SW).
