Activities

Field Visit (26 January 1995)

NS95NW 75 9170 5672

The 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Lanarkshire, 1899, sheet xiii.SE) notes an 'Old Shaft' and associated bing material to the SE of the Darmead Linn. The mine is not indicated on the 1st edition of the map (Edinburghshire, 1864, sheet xv) and must, therefore, have been established and abandoned between 1864 and 1893, the relevant dates of survey.

The remains of the mine were apparently levelled in the 1970's, when the present forest was established, much of the bing material being used to form forest tracks.

(CSW 2931-2).

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 26 January 1995.

Desk Based Assessment (1 February 2010 - 1 February 2012)

Cultural Heritage assessment for the proposed Black Law wind farm extension, phase 2. The assessment forms part of an Environmental Statement. The Cultural Heritage assessment identifies all historic environment features within the development area (through desk-based assessment and field survey), and key external receptors up to 10km from the proposed development. An assessment of the direct and indirect impacts of the development on these features is included.

Information from OASIS ID: cfaarcha1-191339 (M Hastie) 2012.

Field Visit (1 February 2010 - 1 February 2012)

The NMRS and SMR records that the Ordnance Survey 2nd Edition map (Ref. G-5) notes an 'Old Shaft' and associated bing to the SE of the Darmead Linn. The mine is not indicated on the Ordnance Survey 1st Edition map and must, therefore, have been established and abandoned between 1853 and 1899. The remains of the mine were apparently levelled in the 1970s, when the present forest was established, much of the bing material being used to form forest tracks.

The bing is clearly visible on aerial photographs from 1949 and 1954 but is not visible on aerial photographs dating to 1975.

Field survey identified no surviving trace of this bing, confirming the record in the NMRS and the evidence from aerial photographs that the feature appears to have been levelled in the 1970s.

Information from OASIS ID: cfaarcha1-191339 (M Hastie) 2012.

Project (August 2011 - May 2012)

An archaeological project was undertaken by CFA Archaeology Ltd on behalf of the Black Law Wind Farm Grid Connection Extension. A desk based assessment and field survey was undertaken from 2011-2012. The aim of this has been to understand direct impacts on recorded cultural heritage assets, both designated and non-designated, and on as yet undiscovered assets within the Core Study Area.
