Activities

Field Visit (25 January 1995)

NS95NW 62 9179 5783 and 9175 5775

Sheepfold (disused) [NAT] (at NS 9179 5783)

OS 1:10,000 map, 1991.

The 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Edinburghshire, 1864, sheet xv) depicts five sheepfolds (at least two of which are noted as Old Sheepfolds) on the W side of East Cleugh, the steep-sided gully of the Darmead Linn. Examination of a vertical air phtograph (106G/SCOT/UK 84 frame 3384 dated 10 May 1946) suggests that only one of them (that at NS 9179 5783) is stone-walled, the others being apparently of turf construction. Of these, three are small ring-enclosures and are depicted on the 1st edition of the map, while the fourth (which is depicted as a tree-filled enclosure) is larger and has subsequently had a stone wall built across it.

None of these structures was located in dense forest on the date of visit, but all the recognised sheepfolds are said to have been left untouched when the present plantation was established in the 1970?s.

(CSW 2923-4 and 7173).

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS, RJCM), 25 January 1995; Information from Mr D Goss (David Goss and associates, Chartered Foresters, Broomrigg House, Holywood, Dumfries), 25 January 1995.
