Activities

Field Visit (7 December 1993)

NN94SE 12 9731 4044

This hut is situated on a terrace in the angle of the Military Road (MR 16) where it drops down to the Ballinloan Bridge (NN94SE 6). It measures 5.8m from NW to SE by 2.6m transversely within a stone-faced bank 0.7m in thickness and 0.3m in height, with an entrance in the SW side. It is shown as unroofed on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Perthshire 1867, sheet lxi).

Along the NE side of the drystone sheepfold to the W of the hut there are six sub-rectangular turf mounds, 1.5m in length, and set parallel to each other. These may have formed the base for a timber ramp associated with a sheep dip and, although the relationship of the mounds to the sheepfold is not clear, they may predate it.
