Activities

Field Visit (19 July 1994)

NT05NW 47 022 571

The site of South Cobbinshaw village lies on the crest of a low semi-improved ridge to the E of South Cobbinshaw reservoir and comprises the fragmentary remains of a church (CSW 3585), school (CSW 3586), well (CSW 3584), three miners rows (CSW 3587, 7011, 7012) and a small hut, which may have been a toilet (CSW 7013). The village was established before the date of the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Lanarkshire 1897, sheet xiv) but after the date of the 1st edition of the 6-inch map (Edinburghshire 1853, sheet xvi). Nothing now remains of three further rows depicted on the 2nd edition map (six roofed rows shown) and the revision of 1906 (two rows roofed, four unroofed). The church is labelled as a 'U.F. Church' on the 1906 revision and the school building is replaced between the date of the 2nd edition and the revision; nothing is visible at the site of the earlier school (CSW 3583).
