Aerial Photographic Interpretation (4 March 2022)
Three roundhouses and what may be a souterrain, all likely to be Iron Age in date and situated on the NE flank of Cairn Connell Hill, have been recorded as cropmarking on oblique aerial photographs (RCAHMSAP 1992). An arc of ditch about 2m broad and extending for about 12m may represent the remains of a souterrain. Situated some 3m to the SE is a circular cropmark measuring about 11m in diameter which represents the remains of a roundhouse. A second roundhouse, measuring about 6m in diameter within a groove about 0.5m across, is visible immediately to the S. There is a possible entrance gap on the NE. What may be the NW half of a third roundhouse, measuring about 15m in diameter, is visible as a semi-circular cropmark about 60m to the E. A possible sunken floored building has been recorded about 3m to the SE of the second roundhouse. It is represented by a subrectangular cropmark measuring about 6m from NE to SW by 3m transversely, narrowing slightly towards the NE.
Two enclosed settlements (NX06NW 42 and NX06SW 41) lie immediately to the NW and SW respectively.
