Crofthead cotton mill consists of "...a group of multistorey buildings, the longest of which is a 6-storey, 15-by-8-bay, flat-roofed block, with a tall engine house and round-headed windows. There is also a 5-storey, 19-bay range. Now a thread mill."
J R Hume 1976
Crofthead cotton mill was founded in 1792. The original mill burnt down in 1883 with No. 2 mill and No. 3 mill dating from 1880 and 1881 respectively. No. 2 mill has an eliptically planned staircase tower.

The works was owned by the English Sewing Company Limited, having previously been R F & J Alexander & Co. Ltd. English Sewing was later taken over by Tootal, who where themselves absorbed by Coats Viyella in 1992. In 1993, Coates Viyella closed the Crofthead factory, transferring production abroad. Along with the closure of Anchor Mills in Paisley, this brings to an end cotton thread manufacture in Scotland.
Information from Mr I Macmillan of Coates Viyella, 1993.
