Scope and Content Crofthead Mill, Lochlibo Road, Neilston, East Renfrewshire This mill was founded in 1792 as a cotton-spinning mill, and was adapted to make cotton thread in the late 19th century by R F & J Alexander Ltd. It was substantially rebuilt in 1880-1. This shows what was the oldest building on the site in 1965, probably built in the 1860s or 1870s, with a corner of the 1880-1 buildings on the left. At that time the works was used by the English Sewing Cotton Co Ltd, a subsidiary of J & P Coats Ltd, to make 'Sylko' sewing thread. This building was demolished soon after this photograph was taken, but the 1880-1 blocks remained in use until 1993. After lying disused for several years they were acquired by a firm engaged in automotive research. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
