Archaeology Notes

NX15NW 78.02 108 561

Cropmarks have revealed two sides of an enclosure about 550m NE of East Galdenoch enclosing the NE corner of a field (see NX15NW 78.00). The EW side runs for almost 100m (with a break about 35m from the E field boundary) and curves to run in a NW direction for about 60m where it becomes blurred by geological cropmarkings.

Information from RCAHMSAP (RHM) 8 June 1994.

Aerial Photographic Transcription (13 March 1993 - 21 October 1993)

An aerial transcription was produced from oblique aerial photographs. Information from Historic Environment Scotland (BM) 31 March 2017.

Aerial Photographic Interpretation (8 November 2021)

This field boundary, perhaps forming a section of a large enclosure of unknown date has been recorded as cropmarking on oblique aerial photographs (RCAHMSAP 1992) at the N end of a low-lying terrace overlooking the Piltanton Burn. The field boundary emerges from an area of geological cropmarks on the NW side of the terrace and runs for approximately 60m in a SE direction where it curves to the E. The second, longer section runs for a further 105m, towards the E edge of the terrace. There is a gap, possibly an entrance, about 32m from the eastern field boundary.

Information from HES Archaeological Survey (G. Brown) 8 November 2021.
