Activities

Field Visit (February 1991 - November 1991)

NS72NW 9 centred 7097 2741

The remains of this mine are situated some 100m to the E of Crossflat Farm, immediately to the N of the track which runs between the farm and Longlandhead. The position of the mine is now indicated by its spoil bing, and traces of a tramway, aligned NE-SW, can also be detected on its surface. An inclined plane, which survives as a broad, grass-covered embankment, linked the mine to the canal (NS72NW 7), or possibly the mineral railway, and is clearly cut through by the main railway (NS72NW 6.00) about 30m from its NW end. The mine is not depicted on the 1st ed of the OS 25-inch map (Ayrshire, Sheet xxxi.5, 1856 {survey date}), and was out of use by the publication of the 2nd ed (Ayrshire, Sheet xxxi.5, 1896), by which time only the inclined plane is shown.

Visited by RCAHMS (ARW, SPH), February-November 1991.

NMRS MS 731/6.
