NS62NE 34.01 centred 6850 2510
Within this area, 50 mine-shafts have been identified. These range from small bell-pits with a rim of spoil to mine-shafts with the remains of pit-head buildings and massive spoil dumps, and in eleven instances a horse-engine platform is visible adjacent to the mouth of the shaft. Only four of the mines were in use when the 1st ed of the OS 25-inch map was surveyed in 1856, and of these two continued in production until at least 1896, when the 2nd ed was published (Ayrshire, Sheet xxx.12, 1856 {survey date} and 1896). The most productive of the mines in this area was Wellwood Pit No. 1, sunk in 1815, and the first in the Muirkirk mineral field to have a steam-driven engine (see NS62NE 34.00).
