Activities

Field Visit (1996 - 2003)

Russell Coleman managed an Historic Scotland funded project to record medieval moated sites in Scotland. Gazetteers were produced for each regional council area between 1996 and 2002 with an uncompleted overall review in 2002-03. The results of the first year of the project were published in Tayside and Fife Archaeological Journal, Volume 3 (1997).

Aerial Photographic Transcription (5 February 1997 - 18 February 1997)

An aerial transcription was produced from oblique aerial photographs. Information from Historic Environment Scotland (BM) 31 March 2017.

Field Visit (26 November 1997)

NN82SE 78.03 8828 2412

Cropmarks on oblique aerial photographs (RCAHMSAP 1989) reveal the presence of a moated site on a broad terrace to the W of the East Lodge. The tarmac drive to Monzie Castle cuts across the centre of the site. The moat (EARNAP 135) is trapezoidal on plan, with two broad ditches about 3m across and set about 6m apart. The area within the ditches measures about 38m from N to S, by about the same transversely at the N end and possibly as little as 25m at the S end. The SW corner of the enclosure is not visible on the photographs, the result of variations in the underlying geology and disturbance by what may be a later enclosure to the W. The entrance lies on the N, and may have staggered ditch terminals, the line of the gap in the outer ditch lying offset to the W. The enclosure to the W (EARNAP 134) appears to intersect the SW corner of the moated site, although it may have been an annexe. It is also trapezoidal on plan, tapering from about 74m to 58m in length from N to S, by about 42m transversely within a ditch about 2m in breadth.
