Archaeology Notes

NM15NE 30 1816 5879

This church was built in about 1802 to serve the Coll portion of the united parish of Tiree and Coll, and was designed to provide seating accommodation for about 350 persons. (New Staistical Accont [NSA], 1845) Coll was reconstituted as a separate parish in 1865, and the church remained in use until the completion of the present parish church at Aringour in 1907.

The church, which is now derelict, stands at Clabhach on the NW coast of the island, and forms a wing adjoining the rear or N wall of the former manse. It is a plain rectangular building measuring 13.3m in length by 6.4m transversely within walls 0.7m in thickness. The interior has been largely stripped of its fittings, but the pulpit still stands against the centre of the S wall.
