Scope and Content Clabhach and Totamore, Coll, Argyll and Bute The villages of Clabhach and Totamore are located near the west coast of Coll in the Inner Hebrides. Clabach is the site of the old Church of Scotland manse on Coll, built in 1866 in the year that Coll and Tiree became separate parishes having been amalgamated in 1618. This view shows Clabhach (foreground) and Totamore (top left). A ruined farmstead can also be seen (centre left). The ridges that are visible in several places are the remains of lazy bed cultivation (farming using narrow strips of enriched earth, often used in areas of poor soil), a pre-crofting cultivation system based on farming raised strips of improved land. The use of lazy beds is associated with a period when the population was high. In 1841, more than 1400 people lived on Coll. This number fell dramatically during the mid-19th century when the lairds of Coll encouraged the large scale emigration of the islanders to Australia and Canada. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
