Activities

Field Visit (1960)

NT12NW 28.02 145 280.

There are four house platforms, 30' wide, in line on the S face of Shaw Hill, (N of farmstead described on NT12NW 28.1 A-D on plan accompanying NT12NW 28).

RCAHMS 1967, visited 1960

Field Visit (21 August 1989)

NT12NW 28.02 145 280.

A group of four platforms were recorded on the S flank of Shaw Hill and are depicted on the plan of the farmstead NT12NW 28 (RCAHMS 1967). None of the platforms is clearly defined and they may be no more than quarries or natural features.

(formerly NT12NW 28.02.01)

This platform (NT1449 2805), the westernmost of the four, appears to be a quarry dug into the scree material at the foot of Shaw Hill.

(formerly NT12NW 28.02.02)

Situated at NT 1451 2805, this is the most convincing of the four platforms. It probably has a front apron about 11m across and 0.6m high, but the back is entirely buried in scree material.

(formerly NT12NW 28.02.03)

Situated at NT1454 2805, this supposed house platform is little more than a shallow hollow on a slope and would have been unidentifiable at the date of visit without the plan.

(formerly NT12NW 28.02.04)

Situated at 1456 2804, this is the easternmost, and, while it possibly exists, it may equally be a natural feature.

Visited by RCAHMS (SPH) 21 August 1989.

Sbc Note (21 March 2016)

Visibility: This was the site of an archaeological monument, which may no longer be visible.
