Archaeology Notes

NY27NW 4.1 219 751

There was a small tower-house within the Roman fort NY27NW 4.00, datable to the 15th and 16th centuries, and occupied by a family of Carlyles. It is not known whether there was an earlier building, but this is likely. There were occupied dwellings within the fort area until well into the 18th century. Surface finds of medieval pottery have occasionally been made.
