Archaeology Notes

NY19SE 17 1568 9174.

NY 156 917. A rectangular enclosure, on the E bank of Coates Burn, measures about 48m N-S by 25m transversely and consists of earthen banks 1.25m high in places with two entrances on the N side and three on each of the long sides. The interior is level but featureless. Traces of a ditch from which the bank material was excavated are discernible on the NW and N sides.

I W Stuart 1973

NY 1568 9174. This enclosure is situated on level permanent pasture above Coates Burn, with gently rising ground to the north.

It comprises a well-constructed earthen bank with a much silted outer ditch, except on the S, with internal dimensions of 35.0m N-S by 20.0m E-W. There is a 4.0m wide entrance in the N side, but lesser gaps in the NE & W appear later mutilations. The interior is at the same level as the land to the N and E, and as stated is featureless.

Untypical of pre-historic works in this region, its form and setting suggest it may be of Medieval date.

Surveyed at 1:2500.

Enclosure [NR]

OS 1:10,000 map, 1982.

A geophysical survey of the site was carried out by GeoQuest in November 1993 on behalf of RCAHMS. A number of anomalies were noted, suggestive of a stone structural feature in the southern quadrant of the enclosure, and collapse and dispersal of magnetic material from the western bank.

GeoQuest 1993 (NMRS, MS 730/12).

Activities

Measured Survey (27 September 1990)

RCAHMS surveyed the enclosure at Shaw on 27 September 1990 with plane-table and self-reducing alidade at a scale of 1:500. The plan was redrawn in ink and published at a scale of 1:1000 (RCAHMS 1997, Fig. 151).

Field Visit (27 September 1990)

NY 1568 9174 NY19SE 17

A rectilinear enclosure situated within a bend of the Cotes Burn is probably of medieval or later date. It measures 34.7m from N to S by 21.5m and 13.7m respectively at the N and S ends respectively within an earthern bank 3.1m thick and up to 1m high. On the NW, N and E, an external ditch up to 3.2m broad and 0.3m deep is visible. Breaks in the bank on the W (3m wide) and N (3.6m wide) are probably original, although smaller breaks elsewhere may be later.

Visited by RCAHMS (PC), 27 September 1990.

Shaw of Dryfe. Listed as (rectilinear) settlement.

RCAHMS 1997.
