Scope and Content Shaw, enclosure, Dumfries and Galloway Situated in the bend of the Cotes Burn are the well preserved remains of a rectangular enclosure. Set on a terrace on the edge of a stream gully, the earthen bank of the trapezoidal enclosure is well preserved, though the ditch is now heavily silted. In 1993 a geophysical survey of the interior found traces of a stone building. Aerial photography and ground survey has identified a number of these rectilinear settlements in Scotland. Possibly of medieval date, it is only through excavation that archaeologists will be able to establish when these settlements were built. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
