(NY 0899 9918) Earthwork (NR).

OS 6" map, (1957)

There is no trace of fortification on the western half of the hillock, but 'it seems probable that it has been the motte or mound, of which the lower eastern fortification was the base-court.'

D Christison 1891

This fort is situated in old pasture land about 1/4 mile (402m) to the W of Rigfoot Cottage, on the road from Carlisle to Moffat. It occupies the greater part of a well-defined oblong hillock reaching to the edge of the slope on either flank and crossing the brow where the ground commences to fall away to the eastward. The plough has greatly levelled the defences, which appear to have consisted of a single rampart, with a hollow in rear of it, enclosing an oval area measuring some 158 ft (48.1m) by 130 ft (39.6m) in diameter. The rampart is now only a slight swelling on the surface.

RCAHMS 1920, visited 1912.

Christison's description does not, however, appear to be borne by his rough sketch and by AP. Visible on air photograph CUCAP W34.

Information from Dr J K St Joseph, 1947.

This feature is now completely ploughed out. The site occupies a slight rounded hillock and without excavation it can only be classified as the site of an earthwork.

Published survey (25") revised.

Activities

Field Visit (26 September 1991)

NY 0899 9918 NY09NE 9

This enclosure, now ploughed flat, is possibly the remains of a settlement. On the date of visit, the site was under grass and nothing was visible.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 26 September 1991.

Aerial Photographic Interpretation (20 February 1996)

NY 0899 9918 NY09NE 9

Air photography (CUCAP 1947 and 1979, RCAHMSAP 1977, 1989 and 1992) has recorded the cropmarks of an oval enclosure on the crest of a hillock about 400m NW of the enclosure on Mote Knowe (NY09NE 10). It measures about 50m by 40m within a broad ditch and has an entrance on the E.

Information from RCAHMS (SPH), 20 February 1996.

Rigfoot, Kirkpatrick-Juxta. Listed as settlement.

RCAHMS 1997.
