(NX 6840 4639) The Battery (NR)

OS 6" map (1957)

This irregularly circular mound of fine sand and gravel, called The Battery, is situated in a low lying meadow, c. 1/4 mile NNE of Torrs farm. Prior to 1889 it consisted of a circular rampart 3' - 4' high, which the ONB states was composed chiefly of granite stones, though Coles only mentions fine gravel and sand. The rampart was 120' in diameter, enclosing a flat mound lower than itself. Many cartloads of material were removed to Grange and Torrs farms for building purposes. The ONB gives no explanation for the name.

RCAHMS 1914, visited 1911; F R Coles 1891; Name Book 1849

The much mutilated remains of a near-circular enclosure occupy a slight natural mound in low-lying ground. It measures c.42.0m N-S by c.38.0m transversely and has been formed by an earthen bank of which only a small portion, 0.3m high, remains on the west side. The interior is featureless. The slight remains and non-defensive situation suggest that this is a simple enclosure. Name confirmed.

Resurveyed at 1/2500.
