(NX 2639 8452) Balmalloch Cairn (NR)

OS 6" map (1957)

A disturbed and partly robbed chambered round cairn of the Bargrennan group, situated on a small knoll. Of bare angular stones, it is c.2.4m high and 17m to 18m in diameter, the perimeter being clear except on the east.

Two chambers are exposed, one being entered from the east and the other from the north, although neither passage is visible. There may well be another chamber on the SW side but, although various hollows have been made in the surface of the cairn, it has not been exposed.

Visited by OS (JLD) 4 November 1955

This chambered cairn is as described (AYR 3; A S Henshall 1972).

Surveyed at 1:10 000.

Visited by OS (SFS) 14 January 1976
