Archaeology Notes

NX28NW 8 2099 8532.

(NX 2099 8532) Cairn (NR)

OS 6" map (1957)

The cairn consists of a mutilated, grass-covered, stony mound, 28m in diameter and 1.6m in maximum height on the north. It is situated at the west end of a slight ridge with the ground falling away steeply on the SW. According to the farmer it has no particular name.

Resurveyed at 1:2,500.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 2 December 1970

No change from OS (WDJ) report. The mutilation comprises slight truncation of the W side by a stone dyke and the insertion, also on the W side, of a large brick built water tank, flush with the top of the cairn, which the farmer calculates must have been placed around the turn of the century. There is no local knowledge of finds resulting from this work.

Visited by OS (JRL) 5 April 1977
