Archaeology Notes

NX16NW 90 1239 6924.

A hut circle is situated on a terrace on the N flank of Diddles Hill 35m NW of the public road. It measures 7.8m in internal diameter and the entrance is on the SE. On the SW the wall of the hut circle forms a stony bank 1.8m thick by 0.3m high but elsewhere it is almost entirely buried in peat. On the NW the wall has been cut into tangentially by a drainage ditch.

On the SW the hut circle appears to overlie a field-bank which disappears beneath the peat 10m to the SE. To the N of the hut circle the bank skirts the edge of the terrace and returns on the NE to form an enclosure measuring 55m from NNE to SSW by 35m transversely (about 0.16ha). The return peters out just short of a robbed cairn about 6m in dimmeter, some 20m NE of the hut circle. About 100m E of the hut circle a stony bank is visible in the ditch section on the S side of the public road; this bank runs up the slope for a distance of about 13m and there are possible traces of it turning W across the N face of the low rise overlooking the road. On the crest of this rise there are at least six cairns with diameters of between 2m and 3m (centre 1244 691 6).

RCAHMS 1987, visited (SH) 5 December 1985.
