Archaeology Notes

See also NX16NE 133.

On the crest of Craigengale there is a deep hollow in the surface of the peat with loose stone in the bottom. Similar hollows in the peat have formed around large cairns and field banks elsewhere and it is possible that this hollow marks the site of a large stone built structure buried beneath the peat.

RCAHMS 1987, visited (SH) 6 March 1986.

Activities

Field Visit (24 March 2022)

This hollow, which is situated on the summit of a ridge in open moorland, measures 9.5m from N to S by 7.5m transversely and 1.2m in depth. There is a small spread, grass-grown mound within it on the NE, which appears to have derived from a shallow depression to its SW.

Visited by HES Archaeological Survey (A. Welfare; G. Brown) 24 March 2022.
