Archaeology Notes

NX16NE 27 1889 6569.

An enclosure is situated on the NE side of the Mines Burn 370m N of Barnshangan farmhouse. It is roughly circular on plan, measuring a maximum of 34m in diameter within a wall about 1.5m thick by 0.4m high. The wall is faced with large boulders measur ing up to 1m by 0.4m and 0.6m in height and there are entrances on the SSW, SSE, NNE and E NE. The first is 2m wide and flanked by two large facing-stones, while three facing-stones survive on the E side of the second. The other two are set at either end of what may be an open-fronted rectangular building built on the line of the wall facing into the interior. The building measures 10.5m by 3.4m internally; its wall, which is 1.3m thick by 0.4m high, is of similar construction to that of the enclosure.

Activities

Field Visit (21 March 2022)

This large enclosure is generally as described in the earlier account. A second enclosure lies about 30m to the SSE, immediately to the W of the wall that bounds the track leading N from the farmstead at Barnshangan. Roughly circular on plan, this measures 10m in diameter and is defined by little more than a ring of intermittent boulders.

The area between the large enclosure and the Mines Burn to the W is cut by drainage channels, the upcast from which has created banks though none of these suggest the presence of another enclosure.
