This shore lighthouse guards the E side of the entrance to Loch Ryan from a point just SE of it. It stands on Cairn Point which projects into Loch Ryan from a narrow shelf in front of the main (A77) road; a solid portion on the E side of the lantern constrains the light to seaward. The lighthouse was built by Alan Stevenson and first lit in 1847. It was converted to oil burning in 1897, and automated (electrified and made 'unattended') in 1964.
