Archaeology Notes

The Third Statistical Account gives the 'tradition' that Kirkmadrine church is 'situated on the site of an ancient 'Druid' temple'. The explanation is probably that this derived from Andrew Donaldson's "Stoneykirk: Past and Present" (1909). Donaldson wrote: 'From the formation of the old inscribed stones at Kirkmadrine there seems no doubt that they have been taken from a Druid temple.'
