(NW 9982 5787) Standing Stone (NR)

OS 6" map (1957)

A block of grey Silurian sandstone 5'6" in height; in section an irregularly four-sided figure, with its broadest face towards the ENE. RCAHMS 1912

As described by RCAHMS. The stone shows no marking; its longer axis measures 1.1m, its shorter 0.5m. Around its base are a number of stones cleared from the surrounding ground.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 14 February 1968

This standing stone is situated on a low rise 260m ESE of Knock and Maize farmhouse. Its long axis is aligned from NNW to SSE and it measures 1.1m by 0.6m at the base by 1.4m in height. The stone bears two natural cup-marks, and a number of field-cleared stones have been piled around its base. Although the stone may have been set up in the prehistoric period, the Name Book considers that it was a cattle-rubbing post.

Name Book; RCAHMS 1912; 1985, visited by RCAHMS (SH) August 1984.
