(NT 8503 6486) Cairn (NR) (remains of)

OS 1:10,000 map, (1973).

'In a copy of a curious document of date 11th March 1561, in possession of Mr Hamilton, parochial schoolmaster of Coldingham, two cairns, called Dalks-law Cairn and the Monk's Cairn, are mentioned as the marches of Coldingham Moor. The first of these stood on the summit of an hill 634ft above the level of the sea; the latter on the lands of Press.' (Monk's Cairn: NT86NE 16.)

J H Craw 1923.

NT 8503 6486. A low, circular, stony mound 17.5m in diameter and 0.4m high, slightly hollow in the centre. A small pile of stones, doubtless from the cairn, has been placed to the NE, just outside the perimeter. When viewed from below, the remains of the cairn are plainly outlined against the skyline.

Visited by OS(JFC) 26 October 1954.

This cairn has been removed except for a slight rim, 12.5m in diameter and 0.4m high.

Surveyed at 1:2500.

All that remains of this cairn is a turf covered spread of stones measuring up to 14m in diameter.
